EXP: How climate change affects Australia

Australia is already starting to feel the impacts of climate change, with weather patterns expected to change as global temperatures continue to rise.

HOW GLOBAL WARMING IS ALREADY IMPACTING ON AUSTRALIA

* Climate has warmed by 0.9C since 1910

* More extreme heat and fewer cool extremes

* Seven of the 10 warmest years on record have happened over past 15 years

* Average rainfall across the country has increased since 1900

* Rainfall has reduced since 1970 in the southwest

* Extreme fire weather has increased and fire seasons have lengthened

* Global sea level rose by 225mm from 1880 to 2012

* Heat stored in oceans has increased

WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN IN FUTURE

* Temperatures will continue to increase with more hot days and fewer cool days

* Extreme fire-weather days will increase and fire seasons will get longer in southern and eastern Australia

* Average rainfall in southern Australia is projected to decrease

* Frequency and intensity of extreme daily rainfall is projected to increase

* Tropical cyclones are predicted to decrease in number but increase in intensity

* Sea-level council rise by between half and metre and one metre by 2100

* Sea-level rise will increase the frequency of extreme events like flooding

* Ocean acidification will continue.
