Explorer to cross Antarctica on foot

British explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes is to lead the first team on foot across Antarctica during the southern winter.

The 68-year-old, described as the 'world's greatest living explorer,' will lead a six-month expedition next year called the Coldest Journey, where temperatures hit minus 70 degrees Celcius.

No one has ever crossed Antarctica in winter before.

"You just must not think about getting old. If you still are lucky enough to be able to walk around not stooped, no crutch, no Zimmer frame, then you might as well go for it," he said.
