Extreme fire danger has been forecast for New Year's Eve in parts of South Australia.

The mercury is set to climb to 39C in Adelaide on Thursday, capping an unusually warm December.

Total fire bans have been declared for 11 districts, with extreme fire danger forecast in the Mount Lofty Ranges and lower south east districts.

Severe fire danger has been forecast for the northwest pastoral, west coast, eastern Eyre Peninsula, lower Eyre Peninsula, mid north, Yorke Peninsula, Kangaroo Island, Murraylands and upper south east districts.

The fire bans will not affect New Year's Eve fireworks planned throughout the Adelaide metropolitan area.
