Social media giant Facebook could be on the verge of releasing a smartphone app that will track the location of users, according to a new report from Bloomberg.
The app would allow people to discover which friends are in their vicinity based on real-time data and is pegged for a launch in mid-March, the report claims.
The move has sparked more fears over privacy, although it is understood the device would be 'opt-in' rather than rolled out to all users, and users would be able to turn it off if they wanted to.

It is not known whether the app will be initially available in Australia.
Facebook has recently acquired two location-based tracking services, Glancee and Gowalla, prompting some to speculate a location-based tracking device could be in development.
The site's founder Mark Zuckerberg has previously noted the importance of moving deeper into the mobile market.
