Prime Minister Julia Gillard has announced a raft of changes to how Australia houses potential asylum seekers.
- Children and vulnerable family groups to move to community accommodation by June 2011.
- Two new detention centres on the mainland, including Northam, 80km northeast of Perth, which will accommodate up to 1500 single adult males and Inverbrackie, 37km north of Adelaide, which will house up to 400 people, consisting of family groups.

- The Darwin Airport Lodge will be boosted to accommodate 400 people.
- Two other sites including the Melbourne Immigration Transit Accommodation centre and another facility in Darwin will be prepared as part of contingency plans.
- Use of motels and tents as temporary housing on Christmas Island to end.
