Tasmania is determined to put forward a fresh new face, with two Gen-X contenders vying to be Premier.

Tasmanian Premier and Labor leader, David Bartlett

- Born January 19, 1968, and educated at Mt Nelson Primary, Taroona High and Hobart College in Tasmania.

- Completed a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Graduate Diploma of Business in Professional Management at the University of Tasmania.

- Worked in IT and as an advisor to former Tasmanian Treasurer David Crean before entering politics.

- Entered parliament in 2004 after then Premier Jim Bacon resigned due to illness. He is the member for Denison in southern Tasmania

- Became Premier in 2008 after the resignation of Paul Lennon.

- He and wife Larissa have two children: Hudson and Matilda.

Liberal leader Will Hodgman

- Born April 20, 1969 in Tasmania's capital, Hobart.

- Is the moderate son of retiring Tasmanian Liberal MP and former Federal Minister Michael Hodgman QC. His uncle Peter Hodgman is also a Tasmanian MP, and his grandfather Bill was involved in politics also.

- Like his father, Hodgman is a lawyer. He graduated in Arts and Law at the University of Tasmania in 1993.

- Admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Tasmania in 1994.

- Met his wife Nicola while working as a solicitor for a local government in England. They have three young children: William, James and Lily.

- He entered parliament in 2002, after successfully running for the seat of Franklin, south of Hobart.

- He was elected Liberal leader after the 2006 Tasmanian elections, replacing Rene Hidding.
