A factory in Sydney's southwest is fully engulfed in flames and billowing smoke high into the air, with about 100 firefighters sent to tackle the blaze.

The fire occurred just before 2pm on Tuesday at a Baker and Co food and beverage factory on Yulong Close in Moorebank.

The site, which has been evacuated, is within an industrial area but just metres from homes and the M5 motorway.

Its flames have broken through the factory roof and thick black smoke is rising into the air, which can be seen kilometres away.

Fire and Rescue NSW have dispatched more than 20 crews and three aerial trucks to the fire and evacuated adjoining businesses. Nearby residents have not yet been evacuated but are advised to stay indoors.

Fire authorities had entered the building to determine the extent of the fire but no casualties have been reported so far.

The cause of the fire remains unclear.
