Fairfax Media has downplayed speculation that it will offload its New Zealand business.

Media reports say Fairfax Media wants to spin off its $200 million New Zealand business which includes mastheads The Dominion Post, The Press and news website Stuff.co.nz.

"Fairfax continues to explore options for all its businesses including Fairfax New Zealand, but at this time there is nothing to disclose," a Fairfax statement to the ASX said on Monday.

The media giant, whose stable of newspapers include The Sydney Morning Herald, The Australian Financial Review and The Age, said it issued the statement in response to media reports speculating about the future of its New Zealand operations.

Last week, Fairfax Media flagged the idea of ending weekday print editions of The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, with only digital editions during the week and print editions for weekends, amid falling advertising revenue.

While The Australian Financial Review may go the opposite way and drop its weekend edition.

In March, Fairfax announced that it will cut 120 editorial jobs.
