Families losers in budget: ANU analysis

Another independent analysis of the federal budget reveals second-round positive effects won't offset the loss of disposable income for some families.

A second independent analysis of the federal budget shows many households with children will lose disposable income.

The Australian National University analysis, which adopted "conservative assumptions", found that changes to family tax benefits are unlikely to be offset by what the government says are second-round positive impacts, such as its childcare package and increased employment prospects.

"The government should be upfront with the public about exactly what is in the budget sausage," Crawford School of Public Policy academics Peter Whiteford and Daniel Nethery said on Tuesday, adding the budget papers should have detailed the impact on families, as had been done in the past.
