Family benefit cuts to proceed

The Turnbull government has split off legislation making cuts to family tax benefit Part B payments, pushing through one measure with Labor's backing.

The federal government has taken up Labor's offer to support payment cuts to coupled families with kids over 13 years old.

The measure has been split off from broader legislation making a raft of changes to the family tax benefit payment, ensuring it will pass parliament.

But those measures Labor won't support - cuts to yearly supplements and a compensation bonus of $1000 for those no longer receiving Part B of the benefit - will be reintroduced to parliament at a later date.
