A family cat has rescued a young boy after he was attacked by the neighbour's dog. The boy was sitting on his bicycle on the driveway outside his Bakersfield home in California, US.

The dog had escaped from its home before sneaking behind four-year-old Jeremy Triantafilo.  As surveillance footage shows, the dog clenches onto the boy's his leg and pulls him to the ground.

Moments later, the family cat Tara rushes to the boy's aid and chases the dog away.

Eliza, Jeremy's mother said he needed stitches for the deep wounds on his legs, but is fine otherwise.

"Tara is my hero," Jeremy said, adding that he "got an owie" from the "mean dog."

TMZ reported that the dog was taken by Bakersfield Animal Control and has since been put down.

Jeremy's father Roger Triantafilo uploaded the footage to YouTube on Wednesday.

"I've never seen a cat do that," he said. "Especially ours. It just shows how much she really has a family-oriented mind set."
