The family of the NSW police worker shot dead by a Sydney teenager have spoken of their heartbreak at losing a loving and gentle husband and father.
Curtis Cheng, 58, was leaving work at the police force's finance department at Parramatta headquarters on Friday when he was fatally shot by a 15-year-old gunman, who was killed by special constables.
"He was humorous, generous of heart and always put the family first," wife Selina and children Alpha and Zilvia said in a statement on Sunday.
"He has set a tremendous example for us as a family.
"We are deeply saddened and heartbroken that he has been taken from us, but we are truly grateful for the fruitful and happy life he has shared with us."
They said they had been extremely moved by the many people who had offered their condolences and kind words, and a personal visit from NSW Premier Mike Baird and police Commissioner Andrew Scipione.
"He will be missed by all of us," they said. "We will cherish our memory of him forever."
