Family payment may be split off

The federal government is likely to take up Labor's offer to cut family tax benefit part B from couples.

Proposed family payment cuts could go ahead with the government considering taking up Labor's in-part support for the measure.

The federal opposition is backing a move to strip family tax benefit part B when a family's youngest child turns 13, while shielding single parents and grandparents.

It is understood the government is considering its options including splitting the measure from broader legislation and using Labor's support to pass it in parliament.
