Family 'support' after worksite death

A man has died after a workplace injury at a construction site for Melbourne's West Gate Tunnel Project.

A man has died almost two weeks after he was allegedly hit in the head with piling rig cable while working on the West Gate Tunnel Project in Melbourne.

John Holland chief executive Joe Barr said in a statement on Sunday the company - which is heading up the project - is devastated the subcontractor died this weekend after the June 14 incident.

"Our hearts go out to his family and friends, and all of the team on the project. We will provide all the support our employees need during this tragic time," Mr Barr said in a statement.

CFMEU secretary John Setka tweeted after the incident: "An engineer has suffered severe head injuries and is in a critical condition after being struck by a piling rig cable on the John Holland West Gate tunnel project."

Transurban chief executive Scott Charlton also gave his condolences, and said full support would be given to the contractor while investigations were underway.

Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said his thoughts were with the worker's family, friends and colleagues.

"We will provide them with whatever support they need at this very difficult time," he said in statement on Sunday.

"Safety is paramount at every workplace across Victoria - and a full investigation is being undertaken by the relevant authorities, including WorkSafe."

WorkSafe Victoria is still investigating the incident.
