Surfing royalty went head to head at Bells Beach on Sunday, with Australia's Mick Fanning knocking out 11-time world champion Kelly Slater in a tense round-three heat at the Rip Curl Pro.

After overcoming compatriot Ethan Ewing in round two, Fanning advanced to round four by beating Slater 13.50 to 12.43 at the break of Winkipop.

Both surfers were desperate to stay in contention and made more mistakes than usual as they pushed hard for high-scoring rides.

Three-time world champion Fanning held a slender lead for most of the heat and did just enough to eliminate the 45-year-old American.

Australia's world No.2 Owen Wright progressed to round four after prevailing in an all-Australian duel with Bede Durbidge.

Wright slapped angrily at the water when judges called him for blocking Durbidge early in the heat, but the 27-year-old composed himself, peeling off a pair of 8.77 rides for a comfortable victory.

Portugal's Frederico Morais scored a clutch ride at the death to send 2014 world champion Gabriel Medina packing after the pair jostled for position early in their heat.

"I knew it was going to be a really aggressive heat," Morais said.

"Gabriel is a really aggressive surfer and likes to start on the inside. I like to start inside as well, so there was a bit of a hassle at the beginning."

Five Australians are involved in remaining round-three heats, including three-time Bells winner Joel Parkinson.
