Australia's peak farming body is calling on the federal government to reconsider its opposition to an emissions intensity scheme.

The National Farmers Federation has outlined its views in a submission to an inquiry into the national energy market by the chief scientist, citing recent blackouts and an "indefensible" spike in power prices to argue the system is broken.

"We want evidence on the table. We want the market to sort it out. We want a technology-neutral approach. We don't think what we've got is working," president Fiona Simson told ABC radio on Tuesday.
