Farmers target $100b goal in new strategy

The National Farmers' Federation has launched a policy roadmap which aims to boost farm gate production to $100 billion by 2030.

Australia's farming peak body has released an ambitious strategy to boost the value of the nation's agricultural production to $100 billion by 2030.

The National Farmers' Federation launched its 2030 Roadmap on Wednesday, with the policy outlook including an aim to reduce farm deaths to zero, as well as an annual report card to measure industry performance.

The strategy sets targets for sustainability, diversity, livability, trade, innovation and investment, while urging government to develop a national agriculture strategy.

Australia's agricultural production is forecast to fall from $63 billion to $60 billion despite drought sweeping large swathes of eastern Australia.

While modelling suggests it will grow to $84 billion by 2030, the NFF earlier in the year announced a higher target.

"We can't take our growth for granted. We need a clear plan and a collaborative effort. That's what the 2030 Roadmap seeks to achieve," NFF president Fiona Simson said.

The plan nominates the goal of agriculture being advanced on the road to carbon neutrality in the next 12 years, with the sector responsible for 13 per cent of the country's emissions.

"We're committing to back policies and investments that will cement Australia as a global leader in low-emissions agriculture," Ms Simson said.

After 41 workers died on Australian farms last year, the NFF is pushing to stamp out workplace deaths in the industry.

"While it may not be feasible to cut this number to zero in the coming decade, we can't aim for anything less," Ms Simson said.

Agriculture Minister David Littleproud told the NFF's biennial conference to be loud and proud about farming.

"We do have a bright future and we will make $100 billion. I will work hand in hand with you - you have my commitment," he said.
