A housefire that killed a man in Victoria's southeast appears to have been accidental, police say.

The man's body was discovered inside a charred Wonthaggi home after firefighters were called to the scene about 9.30pm (AEST) on Saturday.

Six tankers and more than 30 firefighters were required to extinguish the blaze and firefighters later discovered the body of the man inside the home.

Detective Senior Constable Peter Johnston said the fire did not appear to be suspicious.

"It would appear to be an accidental fire at this stage," he told the Nine Network.
