Faulty airbags: Is your car affected by the Takata recall?

Toyota, Honda and BMW are just some of the car manufacturers affected by the Takata airbag recall.

According to consumer watchdog Choice more than two-thirds of cars affected by the Takata recall have not had the potentially faulty airbags replaced.

Others have been replaced with the same defective airbags.

The Takata airbag is part of the biggest recall in automotive history, with suspected links to 18 deaths worldwide - including one New South Wales man.

Consumers are advised to visit the productsafety.gov.au website and follow the instructions for their specific car model.

According to the website, most car manufacturers are sending consumers appropriate information via mail or email, but consumers are also encouraged to contact their car dealer directly.

Talking on ABC News this morning, ACCC Chairman, Rod Sims advised Australians to contact car companies "straight away".

"If you have had your airbag replaced, already, although there's no panic here, get in touch with the people who did the replacement to make sure this bag can last for the life of the car or, indeed, needs to be replaced in five or six years, so you know that and you can factor that in," Mr Sims said.
