Fears Bulldogs AFL skipper gone for season

A hamstring injury, suffered in a 14-point victory over Brisbane, is likely to put Western Bulldogs captain Easton Wood out for the rest of the AFL season.

Western Bulldogs premiership-winning captain Easton Wood is likely to be out for the rest of the season after a hamstring injury in the 14-point victory over Brisbane.

The half-back limped off midway through the first quarter after a Jarrod Berry tackle.

"It's probably more likely that it's a bad one than a two-or-three week (injury), I'd say," said coach Luke Beveridge.

"We can't confirm anything. They always scan them and we'll give more (information) during the week, but it appears he's hurt it really badly."

Leading by 28 points at the first break, the Bulldogs were 11 points down at three-quarter time, but battled back to win 14.19 (103) to 13.11 (89) in front of 16,148 fans at the Gabba.

The Bulldogs move to seventh on the ladder, from where they had won the flag last season, but Wood's injury mars their fourth-consecutive win.

Beveridge did not want to blame Wood's departure for the Bulldogs' mid-game collapse.

"Easton is important to us. Lukas Webb had to go back to give us that extra defender through the course of the day. It probably wasn't our first option but they got it done," Beveridge said.

"We weren't able to stop some of those overlap plays and they became shots close to goal that are difficult to miss. We had some breakdowns but we'd like to defend a bit better."

Defense might be an issue over the final three rounds when the Bulldogs face Greater Western Sydney, Port Adelaide and Hawthorn. Lynchpin Dale Morris is also out until the finals, although Matthew Boyd is likely return on Friday night.

Beveridge admitted Bob Murphy was also no certainty to play at Etihad Stadium after being a late replacement for Jason Johannisen, who withdrew with hamstring tightness in the warm-up.

Trailing by 28 points at the first break, Brisbane rallied and, in a big Lewis Taylor third quarter, he created a Tom Rockliff goal and scored from 50 metres to put his side in front.

Daniel Rich's big boot from outside 50 extended the lead and fourth-quarter specialist Marcus Bontempelli again came to the fore despite earlier forgettable moments.

He marked inside 50 from the opening clearance only to miss the target altogether and then later hit the post twice.

Soon after the fourth-quarter miss, he scored twice and created Jack Redpath's third. Liam Picken also bagged a treble as the Bulldogs pulled away in the closing moments.

Lions coach Chris Fagan admitted the Bulldogs' class in key moments was ultimately the difference.

"We had chances in the last quarter and just didn't have the composure to take our chances and keep the scoreboard pressure on and they were able to," Fagan said.

"We're getting closer to beating one of the big teams. It will come. I don't know whether to feel happy or unhappy."
