A search will continue for a 62-year-old man who went missing in remote Northern Territory as monsoonal rains hit the Top End.

The man had not made contact since January 24, after he told friends he intended to cycle from Leichhardt Outstation to Kelerrk Outstation in the territory's west, NT police said.

The northwest of the Territory as far as the Kimberley region was battered by monsoonal rains which brought flooding and damaging winds over the past three days.

Twenty-three helicopters were used to evacuate 343 people from Daly River as the community reached major flood levels on Tuesday, with 500mm of rain recorded over three days.

A number of schools were closed across the Top End as residents in Darwin and some rural areas were warned to prepare for localised flooding, with authorities providing sandbags.

A flood warning remains in place for the Adelaide River with between 140mm and 210mm of rain recorded in the past 24 hours.

More than 60mm was recorded in the Katherine River catchment since Monday.

But the Bureau of Meteorology on Wednesday morning cancelled a severe weather warning for the Daly, Tiwi, Arnhem and Gregory districts, predicting rain to persist during the morning and then ease.
