Labor wants the federal government to explain why the Australian Bureau of Statistics will keep people's personal details from the census for four years, up from 18 months.
But shadow assistant treasurer Andrew Leigh urged people not to spoil their census forms by giving false information, no matter how frustrated they were.
Dr Leigh told reporters in Canberra it was unclear which minister was responsible for the five-yearly survey and why privacy provisions had changed.
