The main body representing Australia's migrant communities says it will seek commitments from the major political parties regarding SBS' independent status.

It follows remarks by departing ABC boss Mark Scott, calling for what he describes as a friendly merger between the two public broadcasters.

Mr Scott has questioned SBS' ability to differentiate itself within Australia's media landscape, suggesting that joining forces with the ABC would result in significant savings.

He's also revealed that he and former SBS managing director Shaun Brown had discussed the possibility of a merger several years ago.

Joe Caputo is the chairman of the Federation of Ethnic Communities' Councils of Australia, or FECCA, and he's speaking with Kristina Kukolja.
