The federal government is reportedly considering funding Sydney's second airport at Badgerys Creek amid increasing expectations private investment won't meet the project's deadline.

Anticipated investment by the private company Sydney Airport Corporation is unlikely to meet the May 8 deadline and the Turnbull government has been considering several other options for funding the $6 billion project, The Australian newspaper reports.

The options include a model in which the federal government would fund the project in exchange for equity and plans to start construction as early as next year.
