Canberra-based Labor MP Gai Brodtmann won't contest the next federal election.

Ms Brodtmann, who first ran for parliament in 2010 and holds the seat of Canberra, said on Monday she wanted to spend more time with her family, especially her 79-year-old mother.

"By her own admission, mum has years not decades left. I want to be there for those years," she said in a statement.
