Federal budget boost for Adelaide Crows

The Adelaide Crows are to get $15 million from the federal government to help establish a new headquarters in the city centre.

Football in South Australia will share a $21 million funding boost from the federal government, with most of the cash going to the Adelaide Crows AFL club.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said the government would provide $15 million to support the development of a new home for the Crows in the city centre.

The remaining $6 million will be spent on redeveloping the suburban Thebarton Oval into a multi-purpose sporting facility.

"Today's announcement is about investing in infrastructure that supports community participation in sport and football across all age levels and abilities," the treasurer said.

The cash will help the Crows build a new administration and training centre, most likely adjacent to the existing Adelaide Aquatic Centre.

It will also support a high-performance facility for the Adelaide Crows women's team and a talent identification academy for female athletes.

At Thebarton Oval, new training and high-performance facilities will be built along with a new covered grandstand and upgrades to lighting and car parking.

South Australian Senator Simon Birmingham said the government's investment would support better local sporting and recreational facilities, including the potential redevelopment of the aquatic centre, as well as training facilities for women's football and a new indigenous academy.

"Women's footy has inspired new generations of girls with a message of both fitness and equality," he said.

"This vital funding will not only help to deliver two world-class facilities but will also allow for the delivery of numerous youth development, talent identification and wellbeing programs."

Adelaide Crows chief executive Andrew Fagan said the funding was a significant step in the development of the club's masterplan for a new inner-city headquarters.

"It provides the club with the ability to establish a state-of-the-art training and administration facility in proximity to Adelaide Oval," Mr Fagan said.
