Concerns that a federal MP could have been the target of blackmailers prompted Australian Federal Police inquiry, according to a report.

A federal government MP has been the subject of a police check after reportedly making a number of trips to South East Asia.

The checks by Australian Federal Police were made due to concerns the MP, who cannot be named for legal reasons, could have been the target of blackmail attempts, The Daily Telegraph reported on Friday.

The issue was compounded after another MP contacted the AFP.

"We are aware of an allegation made by a Labor frontbencher that has been discredited and dismissed by the AFP," Prime Minister Scott Morrison's office told the Telegraph.
