Federal parliament sits for budget week

Both houses of parliament return in the coming week for the final sittings before the federal election, expected to be held on May 11.

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN FEDERAL PARLIAMENT THIS COMING WEEK:

* Treasurer Josh Frydenberg to deliver his first federal budget on Tuesday night.

* House of Representatives to sit Tuesday to Thursday.

* Senate to sit Tuesday and Wednesday, but go into budget estimates hearings Thursday and Friday.

* Opposition Leader Bill Shorten to deliver his budget reply speech on Thursday night.

* Labor and coalition party rooms to meet on Tuesday morning.

* Expected to be final parliamentary week before a May 11 election.

* Three senators - Wendy Askew (replacing Tasmanian Liberal David Bushby), Raff Ciccone (replacing Victorian Labor's Jacinta Collins) and Duncan Spender (replacing NSW Liberal Democrat David Leyonhjelm) - to be sworn in. First speeches scheduled for Thursday.

* Labor to seek endorsement for a parliamentarians code of conduct on race and cultural issues.

* Senate will endorse a bipartisan motion censuring senator Fraser Anning for his "inflammatory and divisive comments" extending blame to Muslim migrants over the Christchurch massacre, and calling on all Australians to "stand against hate".

* Both houses expected to hear Christchurch massacre condolence speeches.

* Labor to seek disallowance of regulations banning long-term casuals claiming an annual leave entitlement.

* Inquiry reports due on: political interference in the ABC; cashless welfare card; resource tax changes; abuse royal commission redress scheme; quality of checks on aged care homes; national integrity commission laws.

* Valedictory speeches expected during the week

* Legislation for budget appropriations, north Queensland floods relief, instant asset write-off for business, veterans, foreign influence transparency scheme and resource taxation.
