Federer's Open win sets new benchmarks

Roger Federer has added to his stunning list of career records with a fifth Australian Open crown.

RECORDS FALL AS ROGER FEDERER CLAIMS 2017 AUSTRALIAN OPEN TITLE:

* The 2017 Australian Open title is Federer's 18th major crown - four more than any other man - and came in his 28th grand slam decider, another record

* The 18th slam brings Federer level with Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova on the mixed-gender all-time slam winners list

* He becomes the first man in history to win three of the slams - Australian Open (5 times), Wimbledon (7), US Open (5) - at least five times

* In claiming a fifth Australian Open, Federer takes sole occupancy of third place in the Open's all-time winners list, behind six-time winners Novak Djokovic and Roy Emerson

* At 35 years of age, he is the oldest winner in 45 years, since Australia's Ken Rosewall in 1972

* The Swiss ends a five-year drought for a major success - since Wimbledon 2012

* It is his first grand slam win over Nadal since Wimbledon 2007

* The gap between Federer's last success in 2010 and 2017 is the longest break Longest break between Australian Open titles in the Open era.

* Federer achieved the win in his 100th Australian Open match, the third-most of any male player

* As the 17th seed, Federer is the lowest-ranked winner since world No.18 Thomas Johansson claimed the title here in 2002, and the lowest-ranked seed to take the crown

* The win and A$3.7 million prize cheque takes Federer beyond $100 million in career earnings - he is the second man after Djokovic to achieve that figure
