Australian fencer Joanna Halls has kept her hopes of a third Olympics alive after finishing 30th in a World Cup event in Italy on Sunday.

The 42-year-old's high placing in the 232-strong epee field helps gain points towards Olympic qualification, with the Australian team also showing preference to those who earn international competition points when selecting squads for continental Olympic Qualifiers.

Halls won four and lost two of her pool matches to reach the top 32 of the event, before losing to American Courtney Hurley.

The World No.65 competed in the women's foil at the 2000 and 2008 Olympics, before switching to the Epee category after Beijing.
