United States President Donald Trump will attend the World Cup final and present the winner's trophy, FIFA president Gianni Infantino has confirmed.

The US, which is co-hosting the tournament with Mexico and Canada, is hosting 78 of the 104 matches, including the final on 19 July.

But the US president, who is a close friend of Infantino, has yet to attend a game since the World Cup kicked off on 11 June.

In an interview with Fox on Tuesday morning, local time, Infantino confirmed that he and Trump would present the trophy together at the final at New York New Jersey Stadium on 19 July.

"We will be together with the president, enjoying the final, and handing the trophy to the winner, of course, together," Infantino said.

Trump attended the ceremony at last year's Club World Cup final at the same venue, where Chelsea defeated Paris Saint-Germain 3-0.

He remained on stage as Chelsea lifted the trophy, which was later spotted in the Oval Office. Trump claimed Chelsea received a replica version.

Trump has attended several other sporting events, including the NBA Finals in New York earlier this month and the US Open men's tennis final.

At both events, he was met with a mix of boos and cheers.

The White House also hosted the Ultimate Fighting Championship on the South Lawn on 14 June, in celebration of the United States' 250th anniversary and coinciding with Trump's 80th birthday.

According to The Athletic, citing FIFA sources, Infantino has been aiming to attend as many matches as possible at the tournament, up to two a day.

He has been using a private jet provided by Qatar Airways, which is a major World Cup sponsor.
