Fifield to meet with the arts sector

New Arts Minister Mitch Fifield will sit down with about 40 delegates from the sector at a roundtable event in Sydney.

Arts sector delegates from across the country will put their case for a funding rethink to new minister Mitch Fifield during talks in Sydney.

The federal government diverted $104 million from the Australia Council in this year's budget to a new National Program for Excellence in the Arts, to be administered by the arts minister.

The decision to give power to George Brandis, who lost the portfolio after Malcolm Turnbull became prime minister, had been strongly rebuked by the industry.

Since taking on the responsibility, Senator Fifield has acknowledged the measure caused some unhappiness and there is a desire for him to see if adjustments can be made.

He will sit down with about 70 representatives on Friday, while attending the National Art Roundtable.
