Fifth consecutive lay day called in Maui

The world's best female surfers have been forced to surf elsewhere to maintain their form after a fifth consecutive lay day was called at Honolua Bay.

Australians Tyler Wright and Dimity Stoyle are spending time in the gym and surfing elsewhere in Maui in an effort to keep themselves primed for their delayed first heat in the final meet of the women's 2015 World Surf League.

A fifth consecutive lay day was called at Honolua Bay on Wednesday after small swells again hampered efforts to get the competition under way.

With just nine days now available to have the competition completed, organisers admit they may accept less-than-ideal conditions to get the final leg underway.

"It is still really small out here and there's a little more motion than we've seen in the last couple of days but it's still flat," Deputy Commissioner Jessi Miley-Dyer said.

"I'd love to be able to hold us in four-to-six foot Hawaiian I think that would be a really fantastic platform for the women.

"I'm just going to cross fingers and hope that second part of the waiting period really gives us something.

"Even if we get good three-to-four foot we would press go."

Fellow Australians Keely Andrew and Sally Fitzgibbons will compete in later heats, while Hawaiian Carissa Moore is looking to maintain her 900-point championship lead over American Courtney Conlogue to win the title.
