Fifth escaped WA asylum seeker recaptured

The fifth asylum seeker who went on the run from the Yongah Hill Immigration Detention Centre at Northam in WA has been recaptured.

The fifth asylum seeker who escaped from an immigration detention dentre at Northam in Western Australia more than a week ago has been recaptured.

Five Vietnamese men apparently scaled fences to abscond from the Yongah Hill Immigration Detention Centre, about 90km east of Perth, on Saturday August 17.

Two of the men were found at Bakers Hill, some 25km west of the facility, last Wednesday afternoon and another two were caught on Wednesday night.

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) confirmed the fifth man, believed to be a teenager, was recaptured on Monday morning.

No further details were immediately available.

The four men recaptured earlier were taken to Perth Immigration Detention Centre, suggesting they would be deported back to their native Vietnam.

DIAC is preparing a report on the escape, with unconfirmed suggestions the escapees may have received outside assistance.
