The majority of Australians are sick and tired of the ongoing debate about marriage equality and want the issue dealt with one and for all, an independent MP has told parliament.

Andrew Wilkie, speaking on a private bill to change the definition of marriage to a union of two people, said now the federal government's proposed plebiscite was dead the prime minister needed to bring the matter to parliament.

"People just want this dealt with, they just want it over," he said on Monday.
