WORLD FINANCE UPDATE:

Australian dollar has slipped amid pressure from weaker commodity prices and global volatility.

At 0700 AEDT on Tuesday, the local unit was trading at 70.84 US cents, down from 70.96 cents on Monday.

And the Australian share market looks set to open lower after Wall Street sank sharply amid worries about interest rates and persistent fears of a global slowdown.

At 0645 AEDT on Tuesday, the share price futures index was down 91 points at 4,832.

ELSEWHERE:

ATHENS - Greece's lenders still need to be persuaded that Athens can plug a bigger-than-expected fiscal gap when talks on reforms needed under an international bailout resume next week, the finance minister says.

NEW DELHI - India says its economy grew 7.3 per cent in the last three months of 2015, a rate of expansion that puts the South Asian nation ahead of China's 6.8 per cent growth during the same period.

CAPE TOWN - South Africa's Anglo American Platinum will cut 1,000 jobs at its struggling Twickenham mine but have ruled out a sale of the mine.

BENGALURU - Gold miner Randgold Resources says its full-year profit from mining has fallen 11 per cent, due to the decline in gold prices.

DOHA - The Qatari state oil company, Qatar Petroleum, says it has reached a deal with Chevron to acquire 30 per cent of its stake in offshore drilling areas in Morocco.

DETROIT - Honda is recalling about 45,000 newly redesigned Civic compact cars in the US and Canada because the engines can fail and stall while being driven.

GENEVA - The new chief executive of Credit Suisse has proposed that its board make a "significant" cut in his bonus after the Swiss bank posted disappointing earnings last week and announced 4,000 job cuts.
