WORLD FINANCE UPDATE:

The Australian dollar is flat on mixed commodity prices, despite the greenback falling amid intensifying global market turmoil.

At 0700 AEDT on Friday, the local unit was trading at 70.90 US cents, unchanged from Thursday.

And the Australian share market looks set to open lower after international markets plummeted as investors spooked by the health of the global economy jettisoned stocks and fled to safe-haven assets.

At 0645 AEDT on Friday, the share price futures index was down 59 points at 4,708.
