WORLD FINANCE UPDATE:

The Australian dollar is likely to slide further as Brexit fears keep global markets in risk-averse mode.

At 0700 AEST on Wednesday, the local unit was trading at 73.58 US cents, down from 73.98 cents on Tuesday.

And the Australian market looks set to open lower after Wall Street dropped for a fourth straight session, with investors worried about the upcoming vote in Britain on whether to leave the European Union.

At 0645 AEST on Wednesday, the share price index was down 23 points at 5,179.

ELSEWHERE:

LONDON - The lead of the campaign to keep Britain in the European Union over the rival "Out" camp has narrowed to just one point, according to a poll published by The Sun newspaper on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON - US retail sales rose more than expected in May as Americans bought cars and a range of other goods, suggesting economic growth was gaining steam despite a sharp slowdown in job creation.

LONDON - The price of oil is unlikely to rise much further after rallying almost 90 per cent since January, as the global market shows signs of stabilising, the International Energy Agency says.
