Finance staying put in Canberra: Cormann

Finance Minister Mathias Cormann has told a Senate hearing there is no proposal to relocate his department from Canberra.

The Department of Finance isn't going anywhere.

After all the controversy over the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority's relocation from Canberra to Armidale under the watch of former agriculture minister Barnaby Joyce, one of the government's key institutions is staying put in the nation's capital.

"There is no proposal to relocate the Department of Finance, I'm happy to confirm that to you," Finance Minister Mathias Cormann told a senate hearing on Thursday.

"All of the departments currently based in Canberra continue to be based in Canberra."

However, he said there was a proper process to follow if relocation made sense for certain functions or parts of an organisation.

Finance secretary Rosemary Huxtable reeled off a number of recent staff movements in the public service, including 100 employees in Human Services moving from Sydney CBD to Parramatta and 10 staff in the Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations moving from Canberra to Darwin.
