Finch appointed skipper for T20 series

Aaron Finch was stripped of the national Twenty20 captaincy and dumped from the ODI side earlier this year but will skipper the T20 side in February.

Aaron Finch was axed from Australia's ODI side at the start of the year.

Now Finch has just captained the same outfit and been named skipper for Australia's home Twenty20 series against Sri Lanka in February.

These are unusual times in many parts of the world, including Cricket Australia's base in Jolimont, Melbourne.

Players, coaches and selectors have been dumped into a logistical nightmare by an overcrowded schedule.

Australia will take part in three different series in February; each will be a different format, each will be hosted by a different country.

The squad contesting the current three-match ODI series in New Zealand, which started with the hosts prevailing by six runs at Eden Park on Monday, is not at full strength.

Steve Smith, David Warner, Usman Khawaja and Mitch Marsh are all absent.

Smith is nursing an ankle injury but the others are being given the best possible preparation for a four-Test tour of India that starts on February 23.

The remaining members of the India touring party will soon join them in Dubai for a training camp as they bid to end Australia's nine-Test losing streak in Asia.

It means the entire 16-man Test squad will be unavailable for a home T20 series that starts on February 17. The schedule clash prompted selectors to continue their hot-and-cold relationship with Finch.

The aggressive opener was overlooked throughout the recent ODI series involving Pakistan, while last year he was stripped of the T20 captaincy in favour of Smith.

Finch became the nation's 24th ODI skipper approximately 15 minutes before Monday's toss in Auckland, where Matthew Wade failed a pre-match fitness test because of back spasms.

Further good news followed on Tuesday, when the Victorian was appointed T20 captain for the ensuing series.

"It's always a nice challenge and it might mean that I get a game at least," Finch joked of his T20 tilt-a-whirl.

"It has been a rollercoaster.

"It's still very exciting though, any time you get the chance to captain your country."

Finch was an obvious choice for selectors, who didn't want to burden rising star Travis Head with the responsibility.

Veteran Cameron White declared on Tuesday the national side has the look of a "development team" at some points, while Warner lamented the "very, very poor scheduling" earlier this month.

Most current players are keeping tightlipped about any concerns they harbour.

Finch prefers to see the upside of leading a T20 side minus Warner, Smith, Khawaja, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood.

"There's not many bigger names in world cricket than that handful, especially in T20 cricket," Finch said.

"But you can't dwell on that, I think it's a fantastic opportunity for guys who have performed well in the Big Bash to keep pressing their claims for other formats."
