Aaron Finch is confident he's finally found a way of balancing his cricket between the short and long forms of the game after notching his maiden first class double hundred.

Finch plundered the New Zealand attack to all parts of Blacktown International Sportspark on day one of their CA XI's three-day match.

He hit 214 not out and combined with Ryan Carters, 156 not out, to lead the home side to 0-376 at stumps and put a significant dent in the Black Caps Test preparations.

A mainstay of Australian limited overs sides for several seasons now Finch has struggled to make the same impact with the red ball and was dumped for Victoria's opening Sheffield Shield match this summer earlier this week.

That axing paved the way for Finch's late addition to the CA XI for New Zealand's last hit-out before the first Test against Australia at the 'Gabba on Thursday.

And the 28-year-old made the most of his first game against the Kiwis since Australia's World Cup final win in March.

"It's a pretty good start to the summer," Finch said.

"I don't feel like my first class form has been bad for a while, I've played a couple of years in Yorkshire and only one (Sheffield Shield) game last year, I think two maybe three the year before. It's not like I've played a lot of cricket to be missing out consistently is it?

"To play games in a row, in one format is pretty crucial and I suppose when you're chopping and changing formats it can be hard and it does disturb you're rhythm a bit, at the same time I'm a professional cricketer that should be able to adjust a bit better than that."
