Finland jails Cuban volleyballers for rape

Five members of Cuba's national volleyball team have been convicted of raping a Finnish woman during an international tournament.

A Finnish court has convicted five members of Cuba's men's volleyball team of aggravated rape in a July visit to the Nordic country.

Four of the men each received five-year prison terms while a fifth player was given a sentence of three-and-a-half years, the Pirkanmaa District Court in Tampere ruled.

The five men - aged 19 to 27 - were also ordered to pay damages of 24,000 euros ($A35,556) to the woman who lodged the complaint after the incident at a hotel in Tampere, north of the capital Helsinki.

The trial was held behind closed doors. A sixth player was acquitted, and released late August.

The Cuban team were taking part in an international tournament as part of preparations for last month's Rio Olympic Games.
