Firefighters have battled a blaze in an incinerator shed at a medical waste disposal facility in Melbourne.

The incinerator and the piping, wiring and infrastructure around it caught fire at Steri Health in Laverton North, just before 4pm on Wednesday.

The equipment, used to burn medical waste, was inside a 8m by 30m metal shed.

The fire took 26 firefighters an hour to bring under control and was blacked out by 5.50pm.

Worksafe is investigating, with the cause of the fire still to be determined.
