NSW firefighters have been on high alert with several fires burning across the state but fortunately none have threatened lives or properties.

Firefighters were on Saturday monitoring a large bushfire near the NSW-ACT border which has been burning since Wednesday night and further north crews were battling a blaze in thick tea tree scrub near Williamtown.

"Conditions have eased across the fireground," The RFS said on its website on Saturday evening.

"This is allowing firefighters to continue consolidating containment lines through backburning operations."

Those operations are expected to continue through the night.

Severe weather conditions forecast for Sunday could cause the fire at Mount Clear in the ACT to spread to areas of NSW between Michelago and Bredbo.

Total fire bans have been placed across much of southern NSW for Sunday, with a severe fire danger also forecast.

Similar warnings have been issued for the ACT, with local authorities saying fires could cause uncontrollable flames higher than rooftops and embers could be blown about, causing spot fires up to 4km ahead of the fire front.

The NSW RFS is urging people to make sure their fire plans are in place as temperatures are predicted to soar on Sunday.
