A fire that was burning towards properties northwest of Sydney has been downgraded to watch and act status.

Fire crews and aircraft have contained the blaze that sparked an emergency warning in the Hawkesbury region on Wednesday afternoon.

The scrub and grass blaze in Scheyville National Park scorched 20 hectares and was making a run towards properties south of the park.

People in the area were being told to seek shelter if they saw the blaze and put out any spot fires sparked by burning embers.

Despite the alert being downgraded, the Rural Fire Service (RFS) says people should continue to monitor the situation in case conditions change.

It comes as more than 44 blazes are burning throughout the state, 17 of which are uncontained.

The next couple of days continue to see the majority of the state enjoy low to moderate fire conditions, an RFS spokeswoman told AAP.

But she said Friday could see conditions deteriorate with very high fire danger on the cards for NSW.

She said it was too early to say whether the national park fire was deliberately lit.
