A historic north Queensland pub has been destroyed in an overnight fire.

Eight fire crews battled the blaze at the Victoria Park Hotel in Townsville after flames took hold just after midnight. It took three hours to get the blaze under control.

No-one was injured but nearby residents were warned to keep windows and doors closed as thick plumes of smoke filled the air.

Police are investigating the cause of the fire, which also damaged nearby powerlines.

Ergon Energy said only a small number of customers were affected.
