A disused Melbourne gym has been destroyed by fire and authorities have downgraded a smoke warning.

The Metropolitan Fire Brigade was called to the two-storey building on Lawford Street, Doncaster, shortly before 7pm on Monday.

Smoke from the fire had drifted across nearby Williamsons Road towards Doncaster Shopping Centre, prompting a watch and act alert to be issued.

The alert has since been downgraded to an advice.

The fire was brought under control after about 90 minutes, but crews remain on scene.
