A furnace has exploded and remains on fire at an iron foundry in Adelaide's north, with authorities warning of a risk of further blasts.

The Metropolitan Fire Service said smoke in the Gepps Cross area had reduced.
Furnace operator Chris Higgins said he felt lucky to be alive after fleeing before the explosion.
