Firefighters battle SA furnace blaze

Firefighters are working to cool down a furnace fire at an iron foundry business in Adelaide's north to reduce the risk of explosion.

A furnace has exploded and remains on fire at an iron foundry in Adelaide's north, with authorities warning of a risk of further blasts.

About 50 firefighters are on the scene working to cool the furnace in a bid to bring the situation under control.

Workers on Thursday drained one neighbouring furnace of metal and are trying to drain a second to reduce the risk of spread.

The Metropolitan Fire Service said smoke in the Gepps Cross area had reduced.

Furnace operator Chris Higgins said he felt lucky to be alive after fleeing before the explosion.

He said it was clear that something was wrong when the metal stopped melting.

"When those noises came up we just got told to shut the thing and just run," Mr Higgins told reporters at the scene.
