A fire southwest of Canberra, at Pierces Creek, has been contained but is still to be brought under full control, with firefighters hoping to get the upper hand as expected favourable overnight conditions arrive.

An alert for the blaze was on Saturday downgraded from watch-and-act to advice, which means there is no danger to the community.

The bushfire has burnt through about 204 hectares and is 7km away from the nearest Canberra suburb, Kambah.

The fire danger rating for the ACT is still high but firefighters are hoping milder conditions will help them strengthen containment lines.

The public has been urged to avoid the area as westerly winds continue to fan smoke across the territory.

The Health Directorate has advised asthma sufferers and people with chronic respiratory or cardiac diseases to take extra caution.

A very high fire danger rating is in place for the ACT on Sunday.
