Firefighters have gained the upper hand on a bushfire southwest of Canberra after battling the blaze throughout the night.

More than 10 crews spent Saturday night dousing spot fires, clearing trees and consolidating containment lines.

The alert for the Pierces Creek blaze has been downgraded from watch-and-act to advice, which means there is no danger to the community.

The bushfire has burnt about 204 hectares and is 7km from the nearest suburb, Kambah.

At least 13 crews will remain at the fire front on Sunday, keeping a watchful eye on westerly winds.

The Health Directorate has advised asthma sufferers and people with chronic respiratory or cardiac diseases to take extra care.
